Past Events

2024

REPAL’s 2024 Annual Meeting was held at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, on July 12-13, 2024, featuring over 60 paper presentations and 3 book discussions. This marked the network’s 10th annual conference and included a keynote roundtable with former and current members of REPAL’s Steering Committee. The keynote roundtable featured Alison Post (University of California, Berkeley), Alisha Holland (Harvard University), Ben Ross Schneider (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), and Juan Pablo Luna (Universidad Católica de Chile) who reflected on REPAL’s decade of progress and set an agenda for the coming years.

The conference showcased papers on diverse themes across multiple disciplines, including environmental and resource management, energy sector and policy, political polarization and party politics, citizenship and ethnic group incorporation, and historical and socio-economic outcomes. The 10th annual conference concluded with a panel titled “The US Elections’ Implications for Latin America,” featuring William LeoGrande (American University), Margaret Myers (Inter-American Dialogue), Jamil Scott (Georgetown University), and Arturo Valenzuela (Georgetown University). This panel was arranged by this year’s conference hosts and REPAL’s institutional host for the next three years, the Center for Latin American Studies at Georgetown University.

2023

REPAL’s 2023 Annual Meeting was held at the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar in Quito, Ecuador on July 13 – 14, 2023, and included presentations of 50 papers and 3 book manuscripts. The conference included a keynote focused on the state of democracy in the Andes, and closed with a panel focusing on Ecuadorian political economy.

2022

REPAL’s 2022 Annual Meeting was held at Di Tella University in Buenos Aires on June 30 July 1, and included presentations of 48 papers and 3 book manuscripts. The conference included a keynote panel focused on “The Pandemic Challenge to Inductive Research”, and closed with panel focused on the politics of macroeconomic policy in Argentina.

2021

REPAL’s 2021 Annual Meeting was held virtually, and organized by Cornell University’s Einaudi Center. It was held on July 15-17, 2021. The conference included a keynote panel focused on institutional initiatives to address diversity and gender equality at Latin American universities and another plenary session focused on how Covid-19 has affected the region.

2019

REPAL’s 2019 Annual Meeting was held at Tulane University (New Orleans) on May 13 and 14, and included presentations of 52 papers and 3 book manuscripts. The conference included a keynote address by Nora Lustig (Tulane University) on the inequality of markets and politics in Latin America, and closed with an address by Mitch Landrieu (Former Mayor of New Orleans) on “Why Inequality Matters”.

2018

REPAL’s 2018 Annual Meeting was held at Universidad de los Andres (Bogota, Colombia) on June 14 and 15, and included presentations of 45 papers and 3 book manuscripts. The conference included a keynote address by José Antonio Ocampo (Central Bank of Colombia & Columbia University) on political and economic considerations in Latin America, and closed with a panel discussion on the political economy of Colombia, with presentations by Rosario Córdoba (Presidenta del Consejo Privado de Competitividad), Mauricio Cárdenas (Ministro de Hacienda), Rodrigo Rivera (Alto Comisionado para la Paz), León Valencia (Director Fundación Paz y Reconciliación), and Paula Gaviria (Consejera Derechos Humanos).

2017

REPAL’s 2017 Annual Meeting was held at Universidad del Pacifico (Lima, Peru) on April 27 and 28, and included presentations of 49 papers and 5 book manuscripts. The conference was opened with a keynote address by Maria Hermínia Tavares de Almeida (Universidade de São Paulo & CEBRAP) on the political economy of reducing inequalities and closed with a panel discussion on the political economy of Peru, with presentations by Paula Muñoz (Universidad del Pacífico), Piero Ghezzi (Economist, Founder and CEO GPD Partners, Former Minister of Production), Iván Lanegra (Universidad del Pacífico and PUCP), Norma Correa (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú), and Julio Cotler (Instituto de Estudios Peruanos).

2016

REPAL’s 2016 Annual Meeting was held at MIT on June 10 and 11, and included presentations of 47 papers and 3 book manuscripts. The conference was opened with a keynote address by Barbara Stallings (Brown University) on China-Latin America relations and closed with a panel discussion on the political economy of the United States, with presentations by Jorge Dominguez (Harvard), Tom Kochan (MIT Sloan), Chappell Lawson (MIT), and Charles Stewart (MIT). It also featured a discussion about the DA-RT initiative, led by Evan Lieberman (MIT).

2015

REPAL 2015

REPAL’s 2015 Annual Meeting was held at the Department of Social and Political Sciences at the Universidad Católica del Uruguay (UCU, Montevideo) on  July 7 and 8.  Juan Bogliaccini (UCU) chaired the local organizing committee, and Ben Ross Schneider (MIT) and Angélika Rettberg (UNIANDES) served as program chairs.

REPAL’s 2014 Annual Meeting, the inaugural event, was held on June 9 and 10 was held at the Institute of Political Science of Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile with support from MIT Sloan Latin America Office.

The conference “La nueva economía política de América Latina: Estado, política y sociedad durante el Commodity Boom” was held on August 14 and 15 in Santiago, Chile. Bringing together scholars from across the Americas, the conference touched upon a wide range of political economy issues to explore current research topics and build relationships between experts.

 

 

 

 

Conference April 11th and 12th

 

On April 11 and 12, the symposium “Latin American Political Economy Scholarship: The State of the Art” was held in New Orleans to examine the drivers of economic development.
